Working from home has its perks (hot chocolate breaks, cuddles with my cat, sweatshirts), but sometimes I just have to get out of the apartment. When I feel stir-crazy, I tend to wander. Often I don’t have a specific destination in mind, but rather leave on an impulse, thinking thoughts like ‘today I’ll wander to [...]

All of these pictures were taken before that unexpected snowstorm we had on Saturday. I went out on a drizzly, perfectly crisp Fall day. Most people were inside and Prospect Park was unusually quiet. I loved it!

Considering we received 2 inches of snow on Saturday, today’s weather is chillier than your typical Halloween. The chilliness brings to mind a few childhood Halloweens when I had to reluctantly cover up part of my costume with a jacket. As I talked about last year, Brooklyn and all of New York gets into the [...]

I rented the Nikon 85mm 1.4 G for five days and have had an enormous amount of fun photographing with this incredible lens.  I seamlessly adapted to my new life where I actually owned the lens, but a reminder email from the rental site quickly snapped me out of fantasy land. In the four days I’ve [...]

I frequently walk between Brooklyn’s Park Slope and Carroll Gardens neighborhoods, either via Union Street or Carroll Street.  Parts of each walk have their charm, especially when I enter the outskirts of tree-lined Carroll Gardens. However, between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens lies the Gowanus Canal, also known as an EPA Superfund site.  When it [...]

Who likes to compost?  Some people might shrink away from the thought of decomposing food scraps, but I’m the opposite.  I love that you can take your food scraps and, instead of throwing them into a plastic bag destined for the landfill, put them through a process that allows them to become rich matter in [...]

I first learned about Rucola, the new Northern Italian restaurant in Boerum Hill, in an email several months ago.  It’s not unusual for a restaurant to announce itself via email or social media, but Rucola’s announcement wasn’t a press release – it came as an aside.  The email described a new service called This Batch, [...]

I had planned this post for tomorrow, but today’s weather makes it a necessity.  It’s rainy, cloudy and downright gloomy.  At least I have proof that just a few days ago, Brooklyn was sunny and blooming.  Things are still in bloom today and the color of the flowers is a welcome relief from the grey [...]

On one of our very first weekends in Brooklyn (back in November 2009!), we took the 3 train to Park Slope to explore.  After browsing Brooklyn Larder, we rounded the corner and spotted Bark (in fact, I even posted about this–see my picture here.).  I remember immediately feeling enamored with the place, from the name [...]

Every time we wave goodbye to the maitre d’ and waitresses at Juventino and head back to our apartment, Justin and I take turns remarking: “How did we not come here before moving to Park Slope?” After all, even when we lived in another Brooklyn neighborhood last year, we averaged brunch at Rosewater every other [...]
