Some people assign themselves enjoyable New Year’s resolutions along the lines of ‘See friends more’ or ‘Take time for me’. I have those goals too, but I tacked a not-as-easily-enjoyable item to my list: to develop a better understanding of factory farming. I want to be able to: a) Accurately recognize (and explain to others [...]

Joan Gussow exhibits a multitude of consistent character traits that I can only one day humbly hope to possess. Perseverance, honesty, a sense of humor, humility, strength, and a strong sense of morals: Gussow embodies each of them. I was lucky to see Dr. Gussow speak last Tuesday at the 92nd St. Y about her [...]

My mother loves to clip out articles from newspapers and magazines and send them my way. These clippings run the gamut from recipes, to health tips, to local interest stories from my hometown, and to anything related to food. Also known as: Five months after starting, I’ve finally finished Bottomfeeder. Why did it take me 5 months? Frankly, Bottomfeeder isn’t an easy book to read. In my past year of not eating meat–especially in the beginning–I would often classify myself as a pescetarian: I’d eat fish if the menu listed where the fish was [...]

I just finished reading Nicolette Hahn Niman’s Righteous Porkchop. Part textbook and part memoir, the book proved to be highly informative and incredibly personal. Over the course of the book, Niman’s basic interests in animal rights, specifically from a legal standpoint, become intertwined with her personal life. Righteous Porkchop read like two different books. Part [...]

For the past 7 months or so, I have been completely immersed in all things ‘food related’. Whether I’m at a farmers’ market, trying out a new recipe, learning about school food or USDA policy, or taking pictures, I seem to spend much of my time on a constant quest for more information about our [...]
