Frites ‘n’ Meats
I heard about Frites ‘n’ Meats the week we moved to Brooklyn, which was great timing for my grass-fed burger craving and because Frites ‘n’ Meats is only four weeks old! Their fries and burger truck is located in Tribeca on the corner of Greenwich and Chambers Street.
Frites ‘n’ Meats’ catchphrase (and their mission?) is ‘Saving the World One Burger at a Time’. The owners, V.P. and A.V. (in keeping with their superhero theme, their identities are private, at least as far as my Google searching limitations can tell), clearly have a knack for design, marketing, and making delicious food. They have both a twitter account (@fritesnmeats), with updates such as the ‘burger of the week’ and their call ahead number, and a bright and effectively themed website featuring a ‘super cow’.
I would venture that if you were quickly walking by, on your way to get groceries or head back to your job, and had never heard of Frites ‘n Meats, you would still stop, if even just to see what the crowd was doing in front of the bright yellow truck. Frites ‘n Meats probably generates a lot of their business from spur of the moment decisions, due to their fun truck and delicious sounding menu. Also they have conveniently parked themselves across from PS 234. What kid can turn down French fries after a hard day at school!? (We ate perched beside the school to the sounds of recess…overheard ‘eww, your underwear is showing!’)
Most importantly, let’s talk about the food: you have three choices of meat from DeBragga Meats: the special of the week, grass fed Angus, or Wagyu. [A quick note about DeBragga, for the discerning meat eaters out there (including me!). According to some research done on DeBragga, about 30% of their beef business is focused on grass-fed, all-natural beef. DeBragga sells its meats to many amazing restaurants, including CraftSteak, Momofuku, and Restaurant Daniel. Also, DeBragga donates about 75,000 pounds of meat per year to City Harvest! So, all and all, even if though Frites and Meats chose (or had no choice but) to select a large meat provider, they selected one that is ethically and societally aware.]
After you pick your meat, you have a choice of three kinds of buns from Balthazar Bakery: brioche, potato onion, or sesame seed. You then choose between five kinds of cheeses from Murray’s: gruyere, goat, blue, cheddar, and brie. Either V.P. or A.V. (not sure who is who!) delivered our burgers and fries with a cheerful greeting and the burgers were thick, tender, and juicy. Wow! The fries were crisp, potato-y, and salty (just the way I like ‘em!) and came with dipping sauces like garlic aioli and sun dried tomato aioli.
Demonstrating an ability to be flexible and stay one step ahead of the customers, Frites ‘n’ Meats will be unveiling soups and hot drinks within the next week or so. If you’re in the area and free for lunch or dinner, go check them out! I know I’ll be back.
